BIX device replacement with little downtime

2 September 2021 | The transition to the new Arista platform is expected to cause a few minutes of downtime per connection in the coming weeks.

In the coming weeks, we will replace BIX’s current Cisco Nexus7710 switches at each location with the new Arista 7280R3 platform. The new BIX topology will be VxLAN based and we will also upgrade the backbone capacity between the BIX nodes. The maintenance will result in a short - a few minutes - BIX connection outage for all BIX members.

Our planned maintenance steps:

First, we will replace the switches at Victor Hugo Street site, expected in 3 phases, with 1-1 week intervals:

phase September 9, 2021, 0:00 - 2:00 CEST
phase September 16, 2021, 0:00 - 2:00 CEST (preliminary date)
phase September 23, 2021, 0:00 - 2:00 CEST (preliminary date)

In the second step, the Dataplex site will be rebuilt, expected in early October, and finally the Dataneum site in the second half of October.
